Unit B: Energy Transfer Technologies
TOPIC 1: HEAT TRANSFER
Part A: Heat
According to the second law of thermodynamics, no process is 100% efficient; that is, some energy is always lost as heat. Excess heat can be a problem with regards to weather, people, and machines. In this section, you will learn about the modern theory of heat.
Part B: Heat Transfer
Heat is transferred in a number of different ways. In this section, you will look at how heat travels and how heat transfer impacts mechanical and natural systems.
Part C: Heat Transfer Technologies
Many technologies rely on an understanding of heat and heat transfer. In this section, you will investigate how heat can be used to do work. You will also study how the systems your body uses to cool down or warm up are similar to the systems used to control engine and machine temperatures.

TOPIC 2: APPLICATIONS OF ENERGY TRANSFER TECHNOLOGIES
An understanding of energy transfer has led to the development of numerous technologies designed to control energy loss and improve efficiency. Here, you will investigate methods of preventing heat loss and harnessing energy efficiently as applied in the construction of many modern-day buildings.
TOPIC 3: SIMPLE MACHINES AND ENERGY TRANSFER
Simple machines are used on a daily basis to make work easier. Here, you will investigate the types of machines we use to do work, the relationship between work and energy, and how to improve the efficiency of machines.
