Unit C: Matter & Energy in Living Systems
TOPIC 1: CELLS
Cells are the basic unit of life. Responsible for converting energy into usable forms, cells are composed of a number of organelles, each with a specific role in this energy conversion process. The information encoded by the DNA within each cell also controls the functioning of living things, contributing to a larger system of tissues and organs. Here, you will compare the structure of plant and animal cells, and relate the similarities and differences to their adaptive purpose.
TOPIC 2: HUMAN SYSTEMS
The cells in our body are specialized to perform specific functions. In this section, you will investigate the components of the digestive and circulatory systems, and describe how they work together to fuel our bodies and eliminate waste.
TOPIC 3: MAINTAINING HOMEOSTASIS
Our body systems have a number of different needs in order to function properly. Here, you will look at the importance of nutrition in helping to maintain homeostasis, and investigate the consequences of various lifestyle choices on human health.
